Halloween Cookie Recipe

Halloween Cookie Recipe

A good Halloween Cookie Recipe is all about ghosts, goblins, pumpkins, witches and all the other shapes recognized at Halloween.

In addition to shape you can't forget about the flavors and colors.

For the shapes all you need is a set of Halloween cookie cutters and a good cut out cookie dough recipe. If there's a crafts store near you they probably have cookie cutters.

You can also order online from Wilton.

Just do a search on their site for "Halloween".

You also shouldn't miss the Popcorn Ball Recipes section of this site. What's Halloween without popcorn balls?

If you're not handy with decorating cookies I noticed that Wilton also has Halloween cookie cutter stencil sets.

These consist of a cookie cutter and stencils to place over the baked cookie.

After placing the stencil you just color in the open spots with the color of your choice. Pretty neat. I might order one.

To use your cookie cutter tools effectively you need a cookie recipe that's not only great tasting but also one that will hold its shape in the oven. You don't want a recipe that spreads so much you loose the details in your cut out.

Here is a recipe that will perform very well. Plus it tastes great!

Halloween Cookie Recipe

1/2 cup (3 1/4 ounces) vegetable shortening
8 tablespoons (1 stick, 4 ounces) butter
1/2 cup (4 ounces) brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 cup (3 1/2 ounces) granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 large egg
2 1/2 cups (10 1/2 ounces) unbleached all-purpose flour
1/2 cup (2 ounces) white rice flour or cornstarch

In a large bowl, beat together the shortening, butter, sugars, salt, baking powder and vanilla. When well blended, add the egg, beating until fluffy. Whisk the flours and/or cornstarch together and stir in. Divide the dough in half, form into disks, wrap well and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Remove the chilled dough from the refrigerator and roll it 1/8 inch thick on a lightly floured surface. (I rolled the dough out between sheets of parchment - no flour needed). Cut with Halloween cookie cutter of your choice, place the cookies on a lightly greased or parchment-lined baking sheets, and bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until they're very lightly browned on the edges. Remove them from the oven and cool on racks.

Makes 3 1/2 dozen cookies.

Decorate the cookies from your Halloween Cookie Recipe with the colors of Halloween and you'll be ready for all the little ghost and goblin trick or treaters.
