Icing Recipe
Even though the terms icing recipe and frosting recipe are used interchangeably I like to make a distinction between the two. An icing recipe will harden as it dries. A frosting will stay soft.
You can read more about frosting on the frosting page.
There are recipes listed on this site that are actually frosting, according to my definition, but I won't quibble over it. If it was sent to me as an icing then I list it that way.
Even though icing is simple to make it is a little difficult to use simply because you have to work quickly. It sets into a firm glaze once it dries, and it does dry in a hurry.
Icing has a long and distinguished history of being used to decorate cookies, fruitcakes, wedding cakes and petit fours.
Icing recipes have probably been around as long as refined sugar has been available. I can imagine that the first ones were probably sugar and a liquid boiled until the sugar dissolved.
If you're new to cookie decorating then this should probably be the place to start. To me making icing is a little easier than making frosting.
