Snickerdoodle Cookie Recipe
I can't say that this snickerdoodle cookie recipe is the original but it is a darned good one. Just think crispy, cinnamony and sweet.
"Snickerdoodle cookies have been around so long because they are so darned good."
In fact I would argue that no one even knows of an original recipe for this cookie because it's been around for so long.
Some early versions included fruits or nuts but this is the version I like:
Snickerdoodle Cookie Recipe
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
In a medium sized mixing bowl mix the butter, shortening, and the sugar. Mix until well combined. Add the eggs one at a time and mix after each addition until they're well incorporated.
Combine the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt in another bowl. Be sure they are well combined so you don't have any pockets of one or the other.
Add about 1/3 of the flour mixture into the butter mixture and mix in thoroughly before adding another third and then the final third.
Roll the dough by rounded teaspoonfuls into balls.
Mix the cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl and roll the balls in the mixture. Place the balls on an ungreased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Mash the cookies to 1/2-inch thickness with the bottom of a glass.
Bake the cookies about 8 to 10 minutes or until edges just begin to brown. Remove to a rack and allow them to cool.
What's In a Name?
For some unknown reason around the turn of the last century publishers in New England loved to give their cookie recipes whimsical names.
Names like snickerdoodle, kinkawoodies, tangle breeches, jumbles, cry babies and jolly boys are just some.
Who knows why? Maybe it was just because they were fun to say.
Despite the fact that this snickerdoodle cookie recipe is so great tasting and easy to make I think it's the name that has given the cookie longevity.
