Soft Sugar Cookie Recipe

So you don't like your cookies crispy huh? Well this Soft Sugar Cookie Recipe should be right up your alley. There's one rule you should not break for any soft cookie recipe.

"Don't Over Bake Your Sugar Cookies!"

A good soft sugar cookie recipe is only the start of a soft cookie. Cooking time is critical. They should be just beginning to brown around the edges but still soft to the touch in the center.

Soft Sugar Cookie Recipe

4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 heaping cup sugar
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/3 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.

Mix the flour, baking powder, salt and butter together with a fork or pastry blender until crumbs form, as you would for a piecrust.

In another bowl, combine the baking soda and sugar and then mix in the eggs, milk, vanilla, and nutmeg. Pour the sugar crumb mixture into the flour mixture and mix until smooth.

Chill the sugar cookie dough for at least 1 hour for easier dough handling. Roll out the dough and cut into desired shapes.

Bake the sugar cookies 12 to 15 minutes at 375 degrees. Watch closely. Cooking time has a lot of variables.

Residual Cooking

One of those variables is residual cooking. That term simply means that the cookies continue to cook even after you remove them from the oven. So as soon as you can get a spatula under the sugar cookie remove them from the hot cookie sheet to a cooling rack.

Keeping Your Soft Sugar Cookies Soft

If you plan to eat your sugar cookies right away you won't have any problems with its soft texture staying soft. After a couple of days on the counter though they will dry out.

For storing for up to a week place you sugar cookies in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator.

They will keep even longer if frozen. I like to freeze mine on a sheet pan. That way each cookie is frozen individually. They can then be placed in an airtight container and should keep for two months easily.

In the event that your sugar cookies do dry out and crisp up on you there is a solution. Place the cookies in an airtight container along with a slice of bread.

The cookies will wick the moisture from the bread and you'll have soft sugar cookies again. And they won't taste like the bread!

An Easy Soft Sugar Cookie Glaze

To make an easy glaze for decorating, simply mix a few teaspoons of milk into a cup of confectioner's sugar, adding more milk as needed until desired consistency.

For a flavored glaze, add 1/4 teaspoon flavoring extract of your choice per one-cup batch before you add the milk. You can also color the glaze with a few drops of food coloring.

This glaze will dry hard. It’s great with any Soft Sugar Cookie Recipe.
