Sugar Cookie Recipes
Sugar cookie recipes are among my favorites. But I guess my favorite cookie is whatever cookie I’m talking about at the time. "Bake up a batch of sugar cookies and surprise a friend with a cookie gift."
When I was a little fellow growing up I had a country grandmother and a city grandmother. I don’t remember my city grandmother baking cookies but I’m sure she did. I do remember my country grandmother baking sugar cookies though. She called them teacakes. Looking back on that time I realize that her “teacakes” were just a basic sugar cookie recipe. My country grandmother cooked on a wood-burning stove. I can remember being bribed to bring in “stove wood” with the promise of some teacakes. I never knew her exact recipe but I do remember the edges were extremely thin and brown and they were a little puffy in the middle. I can imagine how hard it was to control temperatures in a wood-burning stove. The fat had to be homemade butter or home rendered lard since they produced most everything for the kitchen from the farm. If there were eggs in her recipe they came from her chickens. The milk I had along with my bribe came from her cows. I do remember the sugary vanilla flavored taste so I guess they did buy those items. Along with the flour and baking powder. I can still picture her rolling out the dough with a huge wooden rolling pin and cutting the cookies out with a drinking glass. It’s funny to me that I should remember that from so long ago. That had to be in the late 1940’s. Goodness! I’m getting old. :) Like I said I never knew her recipe but this one has to be close: Sugar Cookie Recipe3/4 Cup Butter 1 1/2 Cups Sugar 2 Eggs 1 Tsp. Vanilla 2 1/2 Cups Flour 1 Tsp. Baking Powder 1 Tsp Salt
Mix the Butter, Sugar, Eggs and Vanilla; Blend in the Flour, baking Powder and Salt; Cool the dough in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour. Roll dough to 1/8" thickness and cut into the shape or images you desire. Bake cookies at 400F for 6 to 8 Minutes I’ve baked this cookie recipe and even though it may not be exactly like hers it sure brings back memories of simpler times.
