Vanilla Frosting
This is a basic and very simple vanilla frosting. It's very forgiving and almost foolproof. Adjusting the consistency is simply a matter of adding more sugar or more milk.
The recipe uses shortening instead of butter so the vanilla flavor does not have to compete with a butter flavor.
Shortening also gives a pure white color to the frosting and in the event you would like to color it you get brighter colors than you would with butter.
To heighten the color even more you can use clear vanilla.
Vanilla Frosting Recipe
1/4 c. Crisco Shortening
1/2 tsp. Salt
2 tsp. Vanilla
3 c. confectioners' sugar (sift if lumpy)
1/4 c. milk
In a bowl mix the Crisco, vanilla and about 1/3 of the sugar. Add the milk and the remaining sugar alternately; mix until smooth and creamy. Add more sugar to thicken or milk to thin the frosting if needed for good spreading consistency.
You can store your frosting in the refrigerator for up to three days or in the freezer for up to three months.
When you're ready to use it just let it come to room temperature and remix it until it's smooth and creamy again.
